This 3 bike trunk-mount rack from Bell Sports is well constructed and stable when on the car (or mini-van as I did also) but the separation of the 2 bars on which the bikes mount are too far apart. It was virtually impossible to mount smaller road bikes (adult bikes, not kids bikes) in the conventional manner - through the main triangle.
